As I sit still enjoying my haul of Easter goodies I get to thinking about Aesop’s wise fable and it´s modern day meaning for team success …
“One fine day it occurred to the Members of the Body that they were doing all the work
and the Belly was having all the food.
So they held a meeting,
and after a long discussion, decided to strike work till the Belly consented to take its proper share of the work.
So for a day or two, the Hands refused to take the food, the Mouth refused to receive it, and the Teeth had no work to do.
But after a day or two the Members began to find that they themselves were not in a very active condition.
The Hands could hardly move, and the Mouth was all parched and dry, while the Legs were unable to support the rest.
Thus they found, that even the Belly in its dull quiet way was doing necessary work,
and that they all must work together or the Body will go to pieces.”
So you see even as far back as 600BC this wise fable shows us the importance of team harmony within an organisation to ensure it´s smooth running.
Just as Aesop´s Members soon discovered the importance of Belly, I ask, can modern day companies risk lack of function and missed opportunities in upsetting the daily flow of team operations?
At ActionCOACH we promote a proactive and supportive approach to prevent these conflicts with our Team Management Strategy; the key objectives being;
-Ensure your organisation has a simple hierarchy structure with clear lines of accountability for performance.
-Hold regular team meetings to enable all staff an opportunity to express constructions and frustrations.
-Conduct regular appraisals.
-Make sure everyone has a clear Job Description together with their Measures of Success.
Lets think back about Aesop’s Body Members or indeed those of your organisation… had these appendages and organs had such a strategy engaged, could they have fitted in a few more bounty bars whilst reading this post?!
