On my Business Owners and Entrepreneurs – Transition Guy Podcast I interview some of the most successful global business leaders. The tips they give us are invaluable. I am a business coach with over 30 years business experience. I have long standing clients both here and in the US who I help to scale up their companies. I’d like to share a bit of how I do that. A lot of the work I do with my clients is around mental and physical strength within business. We look at how 2023 is going to be a tough year for many businesses but with some mental strength tips you can make it a successful one for you and your business.
Wiping the slate clean
It has been a tough year for many of you in business but the last three years have seen unprecedented circumstances and to still be pushing on is a wonderful accolade. Some people will have a great 2022. Those people are largely people who started their businesses during covid. They were starting at the worst possible time so to succeed means that from there things have been easier for them. Now is the time for reflection and asking yourself some questions.
What do you need to do to succeed next year
Start with your goals. Often we lose our energy and our focus and succumb to the bullshit the negativity that may surround us. When all you are hearing in the media is talk of the recession and the cost of living crisis is going to cripple everyone, it can be difficult to rise above it all. There will be changes in behavioural patterns but let us focus on the positives. Think about the goals, aspirations and opportunities there are in a marketplace. Business carries on during a recession – the world doesn’t stop but it does reset.
Unlearn your bad habits
Recession may wipe out 10 or 15% of revenue but the economy will still be at 85% of its level which means there is still lots of business being done. Make sure you are in the game rather than your competitors. Use 2023 to learn as well as unlearn bad habits. A good book to read on this subject is David Goggins’ second book, “Never Finished”. Goggins is ultra disciplined. His ability to go after his goals, never give up, and always work towards achieving them is awe inspiring. He doesn’t give up and neither should you.
Don’t give up
We’re at a very dangerous point in the economy where a lot of business owners out there are tired. Some will be feeling the mental and physical strain. Ask yourself ‘why did I get into this business in the first place and am I going to give up? David Goggins didn’t give up. If there is a setback, he works twice as hard. Despite being tired, step it up a gear and fight. Don’t be lazy and don’t take your foot off the gas no matter how good you think that may feel. That feeling will be short-lived. Double down and push the pedal harder. Don’t let 2023 be someone else’s success.
Stay away from the media
Acknowledge the fact that there is a recession happening. However, also acknowledge the fact that there are a lot of opportunities. Change your business accordingly so that you can go after those opportunities and have the success you truly want. Don’t go into next year half-heartedly.
