Colin Wheeldon Director Terrain Surveys
By mid 2014, myself and my two fellow Directors were struggling to cope with our workload and at the same time grow our business. We started working with John Cottrell in October 2014. Since then John has been instrumental in helping Terrain Surveys create a company structure and ethos that has now put us in a great position to push on and grow the business. We have been able to pass on a lot of the day to day responsibilities onto a newly created senior management level, allowing us to concentrate on working ON the business. As Directors, we have more time and our employees have thrived with their additional responsibilities.
Collin’s one of those rare guys who rarely sees the world outside himself. He started Terrain Surveys with his colleagues John and Neil because where they were, they weren’t being developed as people, so developing people became one of the key, if you like, the key ethos of Terrain Surveys. As well as doing a great job as topographical and measured building surveyors, it was also about developing the team to be the best that they could be and now, coming up to retirement, it’s about developing succession, having the systems in the business so that it really works properly, having the succession so literally the MD being appointed two years before his retirement so that he’s able to do his business apprenticeship while the founding Directors are still in place. There’s not many companies that have the wisdom to do that, so really interesting working with these guys.
