A while back I wrote a piece titled “The Myth of the Self-made man”

In which I pointed out that everyone without exception that has achieved great things has had a mentor of some description in their lives, it could be parents, teachers, siblings, friend’s, bosses or a coach the fact is that every single one of them had someone.

Interestingly enough I was reminded of this post that I wrote back in 2014 today when I was going over some notes from the Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod (if you haven’t read it yet I strongly suggest you do it’s one of the best books I have read in the last 5 years) in which he talks about the fact that as children we are held accountable by our parents, teachers, siblings, friends, or maybe our sports coach  so that vegetables got eaten, homework was completed, teeth were brushed and we washed and got to bed at a reasonable hour, it’s also why we why made it to adulthood as functioning members of civilisation.

If we hadn’t of had that support and guidance it’s almost inevitable that we would have been as Hal puts it “uneducated, malnourished, sleep deprived dirty little kids.”

Hal goes on to point out that as we hit out teens and finally legal adulthood we rebel against accountability and believe we have freedom to choose what we do and when we do it and then we wake every day and get out of bed because we must.

This is because whether you like it or not someone is always holding you accountable. The bank for your mortgage, your landlord for your rent, your boss for your wages, your customers for your product or service, you don’t have freedom from accountability, you never did and you never have had. What you do have is freedom to choose who you are accountable too. Do you want it to be to your bank manager or to someone who will push you to become the person you are capable of becoming?

I speak with a lot of people who want a better life, who know that for them to achieve their goals they need to change and grow, I speak with a lot of people who understand that they need an unreasonable friend who holds them accountable for the things they said they would do and yet they continuously put that off as well.

Which brings me back to the title of this post,

When would NOW be a good time to start living the life you truly want to live?
