Do you sometimes feel like you are the one who is working the hardest, the one who cares the most and the one who is left with all the problems? Part of this is due to your seniority and the fact that you feel that the buck stops with you. It is however important that you get the most from your team – you need to make sure that everyone cares and that everyone is pulling their weight.

Here are a few tips that can ensure this is the case:

  • Be a strong leader – lead by example. “Do as I do” is far more effective than “do as I say”.
  • Set, share and live the company’s values. These underpin the rules of the game and give people a sense of community.
  • Communicate with your team – keep them informed and listen to them. Praise good behaviour and give regular feedback.
  • Create a win:win mentality and environment – imbalance can cause frustration and resentment.
  • Have fun – encourage creativity and innovation – this is a great motivator and can be a great source of ideas for improvement.

Working in isolation does not grow relationships nor a sense of community. If the leader works like this, it can also set a tone that permeates down in an organisation such that employees do not support each other or you. If it looks like you as a leader doesn’t care, why should they?

Always think about what actions you taking to help set the right tone, build relations and create a sense of community in your business.
