Stop the struggle with your team.
Do you feel like you are having constant battles getting your team to do what you want them to? Is each day like a tug of war?
Always remember you can’t ever change people, they will only change if they want to, so if you want to change things, start with yourself! One of our generalised principles that I often like to use (and one of my favorites) Is BE x DO = HAVE. It can be used successfully in virtually any aspect of your life, but let’s just talk about this situation;
So, your team won’t change, they won’t do what you want them to or their performance doesn’t match your expectations….
Who do you have to BE, what do you have to DO to ensure you can HAVE the results you want from them. Communication is key. Do they even know what you want or do you just either end up doing it yourself or calling them out. Do they know where your company is heading or what goals you have set for it to achieve? Probably not. (If they do then congratulations, I’m guessing that you don’t have so many team issues.) So perhaps you have to BE the person that communicates.
Surprisingly, (or not) involving your team in what your hopes are for the company, where you see it heading and the challenges you have, will have a massive impact on their performance. If you don’t have team meetings or department meetings to communicate, perhaps this is something you need to DO. Why you may ask?
- They will feel trusted.
- They will feel respected
- They will feel involved, part of a team.
Everyone likes to be involved, to be part of a group, I’m pretty sure everyone reading this is part of a Facebook group, so why are you? Common interests perhaps? so you know what’s going on? and probably, more than anything, because you like to contribute. You you like to feel like you know what you are talking about and who doesn’t? Its just the same for your staff. It’s the difference between the hard core, pushing them in the direction you want or pulling them along and we’ve all seen the strong men pulling the big heavy truck with a rope, I don’t think you will find so many pushing one. (unless its on a hill of course)
