When you read that headline which one would you prefer and do you naturally think one is more attainable than the other?

I’m sitting with my client in a Coaching session and we are talking about the future of the business. Naturally, we get onto the topic of turnover and profit that he’d like to achieve. There’s some long term debts to be paid, investment required to improve the premises as well as the usual host of things on his mind. It all seems so unobtainable when we came up with a target of £300,000 net profit. That’s the milestone figure that he feels will give him more security and fund the next level of the life style he’d like. Just looking at the number and comparing it to the current level created a feeing of overwhelm in his mind. This had lead him to not act and he wasn’t making any progress.

So, time for a ‘reverse 5 Ways’ I said ! .  What’s a reverse 5 Ways I hear you say and what exactly is this Coaching mularchy ?

Once I know his current net profit per client I can see how many clients £300k would represent.  I know his average sale and how often customers buy from him so in 5 minutes I have calculated that a £300k net profit means 4 clients a week. He’s currently running at the rate of 2 clients per week.

The question now becomes……what does it take to double the business and how achievable is it?  Once we talk through the numbers and break it down into something meaningful I can see a shift in his attitude. He now feels that 4 clients a week would be possible with the right strategy and our conversation moves onto how we can take action to achieve it.

So,  £300,000 net profit this year paralysed him but 4 new clients a week empowered him. It’s these simple yet powerful conversations that get people results.  All it took was a different approach, some basic analysis and a shift in mindset led to a valuable discussion about the plan we need to have in place.

That’s the key point about goals. It’s great to set them but the reality is you need to break it down and put in place a simple system of daily activity to achieve them. I enjoy enabling people to see their business in a different way and holding them accountable to achieve what they need and want.
