Setting the bar high for your commitment as a business to the development of your employees is vital. For your business to survive and thrive development is paramount. Many businesses set intentions for the development of their staff but very often fail to follow it through.

To ensure you really commit to being instrumental to their growth, there are questions and monitoring concepts available. These will provide a framework to help develop their skills, achievements and overall happiness in their career.

Develop a plan

Sit down with the employee and discuss individual interests and career goals. This conversation will help identify the development activities the individual should be undertaking. The plan should provide a roadmap for the employee that includes measurable goals and a realistic timeframe for achieving each.

Measure it

Engage with each other and set out specific, timed and detailed plans. Try not to do the classic setting them and forgetting them. A timeline for these is a you will have a clear plan on how they can be achieved and by when. Nobody completed a marathon without first setting shorter distance goals initially.

Feed it back

Feedback most certainly does not mean criticising your employees. All the negativity will have the opposite effect. Try constructive feedback to help your employees stick to and remain on the right track. Feedback is a tool for growth and recognition and not a tool to knock the employee down. Start praising and watch the growth.
