Being Mindful in the Workplace

Mindfulness in the workplace has many benefits including increased productivity levels, stress reduction, improved relationships and, ultimately, a collaborative working environment. This week, we hear from Debbie Clement-Large, a Transformational Life Coach who believes in whole-hearted living, on embracing mindfulness.

A few short years ago the thought of using mindfulness in the workplace would have undoubtedly raised a few eyebrows.

Since scientific evidence of how mindfulness can cultivate well-being has been published, mindfulness has been embraced by many businesses including giants like Google, Intel and Goldman Sachs as well as banks, advertising agencies, schools, government departments and third sector organisations.

For most of us our thoughts never seem to stop. They arrive in the morning, one after the other until we go to sleep. Very quickly we can get ourselves into a negative cycle of chatter. This continuous mental noise makes it difficult to find inner stillness and peace. Our overactive negative chatter can lead to acute or chronic stress.

Learning how to be more mindful can not only positively help you to shift your perspective of any problem, it can also reduce the risk of depression by half. The success of any business is linked to motivation, problem solving and collaboration within its workforce. Poor working relationships and stress can erode goodwill, lower productivity and increase sickness levels. The

practice of mindfulness isn’t just important on a personal level. It has been proved to be beneficial and cost effective practice within the workplace too.

When mindfulness is used in the workplace it can reduce conflict, create more positive working relationships, reduce stress and anxiety, reduce sickness levels, increase employee retention, aid transformation and change as well as helping to create a more peaceful and collaborative working environment.
