I’ve given hundreds of talks about business over the years.  I run seminars for business owners and when I ask if there are any sales people in the room, usually only one or two hands go up. But the room is full of business owners and clearly, in every business, nobody eats until a sale is made.

That said, I know plenty of businesses that have been around a while, and grown along the way, even without the owner seeing themselves as a sales person!  Something, clearly, is going right.

Truth is – everyone in your business is a sales person.  The person who answers the phone, the delivery driver, the bookkeeper and most particularly you, the owner of the business.  After all, who is most passionate about your business, who knows most about it, who most wants it to succeed?

What is it about selling that makes us think we aren’t sales people?  There is perhaps a bit of stigma in the UK attached to the word ‘sales’.  The solution?  Maybe it’s as simple as using a different word, or a different way of thinking about it.  ‘Professionally helping people to buy’, or ‘solving other people’s problems – and getting paid for it’.  Whatever works for you.
