Success

The word success can mean different things to different people. It could be something different to the same person at a different stage of their life. You shouldn’t let anyone define success for you. You are the only one who can define and refine what success means to you at any given time.

Take for instance a professional athlete in any sport. Becoming a professional is an incredible accomplishment in itself and many would call it success. But most athletes aren’t seen as successful unless they reach some sort of pinnacle of achievement. Are they a starter or an all-star? Are they an MVP? |Is it fair to say one athlete is more successful than any other based on how much they earn or the notoriety that they get?

Books have been written on this subject; speakers have given eloquent TEDTalks about success. Everyone has a formula. So why do so many of us find it difficult to get, keep and realise success in our lives?

Perhaps it is because we still continue to look to others for the meaning of success? Are we digging deep enough within ourselves to define what personal and business success means to us. Have you REALLY thought about it?

Being a success in today’s world is very different from what older generations used as measures of success. The success landscape has been altered by changes in the world such as global economies and our technology. Trying to define success based on standards set by another generation is like trying to play a football match using rugby rules and equipment. Both sports are played on a grass field but the similarities end there. Trying to play a successful game under those circumstances will only lead to frustration and disappointment.

If you want to play the Success Game you must design it and prepare for it.

If you don’t paint a clear picture of what you believe success means to you, you will never achieve success. So, consider this when you are working on your game plan.

  • Needs vs. Wants
Clarifying what your essentials are and what are just luxuries is your first task. Discovering what is a necessity and what you really want in life will help you to set realistic and attainable goals. Reaching for those ‘wants’ will push you outside your comfort zone and will motivate you to do more.
  • GOALLLLLLLLLLL!
Realistic goals have a timeline. You can track them and achieve milestones, so you chart and measure your progress. Without these essential pieces of ‘equipment’ you’re just aimlessly kicking the ball down the road. It’s still exercise but it’s not getting you anywhere.
  • WHY? WHAT?
Do you know what brings you real satisfaction, fulfilment and peace? Do you have an overpowering calling, desire or passion? What excites you? What motivates you? What drives you? What is your purpose? Locating that itch you have to scratch is essential in defining whether you are ultimately successful.
  • Always Be Learning.
It is critical to always add to your knowledge base. The more open you are to learning, the more likely you are to define and refine yourself. Why? Because being the best version of yourself  can be a success in itself. SO keep adding to the skills and knowledge you already possess.
  • Find the Balance
Creating balance and eliminating the things that detract from your goals is essential. Your goal is to find comfort throughout your journey so that when you achieve success, you will recognise it. You may miss the signals if you’re overwhelmed throughout the journey. So tune out the noise and eliminate the distractions at every stage of the game.
  • Celebrate the Small Stuff
Even the smallest of victories are a success. Every course, every lesson, even every mistake is a step closer to your ultimate goal. Make sure to take out the time to celebrate the little successes along the way and recognise them as small contributions to a larger reward.
  • Belief is Good. Doing is Better.
Self-confidence is important and you need to believe that you are able to achieve the goals your set for yourself. But remember, true success is about doing what you planned. It’s work, not wishing. Taking the steps, learning the skills, and taking the risks are always better than watching from the bench.
  • Have a Gratitude Attitude.
A measure of success is to be grateful for the things you have around you each day. No matter how humble, it’s important to show gratitude for the present. Don’t end the day without acknowledging the abundance you have, because you may not recognise it in the future if you don’t define it today.
  • Get Over the Fear.
You need to overcome the fear of failure if you want to achieve any kind of success. Using a mistake as a learning platform is not only success, it is a WIN! You are charting a new course built on the foundations of what you have learned.
  • There is no END GAME.
There is not an artificial schedule or someone else’s timeline you have to adhere too. You decide. You are in control.

Success is what you make it. And it’s never too late to get into the game.
