Digital marketing is essential, but how well is your current strategy working?
2020 was a year of change, pushing more of your potential customers online. If your digital marketing isn’t strong, you could be pushing business your competitors’ way or making yourself invisible.
2021 is the time to refresh your marketing. And if you don’t have a digital strategy, NOW is the time to start. This 4-part blog series gives you actionable steps you can take TODAY to fine-tune your marketing performance.
Use our free business marketing test to assess your current strategy.
People need to KNOW, LIKE and TRUST you before they buy. How can you achieve this through digital marketing?
Visualise your target customers
You need to know what your ideal customer looks like so you can speak directly to them. Create an avatar:
- Where do they live?
- What are their interests?
- What is their age?
- What is their job?
- How much do they earn?
Go into as much detail as you can. And WRITE IT DOWN.
Consider their values, goals, challenges and pain points.
Once you know who you’re talking to, you know how to talk to them.
Create your brand persona
Now, go one step further and think about your brand persona. Again, consider your values, objectives, demographics.
- Are you young and trendy?
- Are you out to disrupt your industry?
- Are you an expert or thought-leader?
If your brand was one person (and it might well be), what avatar would represent it?
Tone of voice
B2B language is dead. Be human. Be personable and relatable; corporate is cold and it won’t convert.
Your tone of voice is key to getting your customers to LIKE and TRUST you so it’s important to keep it authentic.
Storytelling
How do your customers get to KNOW you? Tell them your story.
Why do you do what you do?
What fires you up?
It doesn’t have to be an epic – a few considered sentences will suffice.
And share your interests. I love ultra-marathons, sailing, outdoor fitness and bluegrass music. If your target audience shares your hobbies – great! But it doesn’t matter if they don’t – they’ve still learnt something about you – the person behind the screen. In a digital world, connection is everything.
Find your USP
Your target customers are looking for something… if you’ve done everything else right, it’s your product or service. Should be an easy sell, right?
But what if you are one of five or ten businesses their search has turned up? How do you stand out?
Find your unique selling points.
