On my Business owners and Entrepreneurs podcast – Transition Guy we discuss all subjects to do with business and business behaviour. Many times I speak to entrepreneurs who are stuck in a rut. They are overcompensating for their team. It means their workload is higher and they are under increased pressure whilst paying for the privilege. So below we will discuss what needs to be done if you find yourself in this position. Ask yourself some questions:
Why is it happening?
If you are overcompensating, ask yourself why it is happening. Is it a skill or management issue to both? Perhaps your managers are not strong enough in correcting their teams behaviour and are therefore compensating for them. Are managers compensating for their team because their team lacks ability or is not skilled in the way they should be? Could bad habits have formed? We have got used to compensating, therefore instead of sort of changing our habits, we just stay in the habits. This all costs a business by causing productivity issues. When we compensate, either we end up doing the work ourselves, which means it’s costing the business, because we’re not doing what we’ve been paid to do or we end up hiring extra people. This in turn costs the organisation a lot more money. How long can you afford to tolerate it for? What do you need to do to fix it?
Identify the skills and abilities that are lacking:
Assess the current skills and abilities of your leadership team and determine where they are falling short. Are there certain areas of expertise that are missing? Are there specific tasks or projects that they struggle with?
Provide training and development:
Consider providing training and development opportunities to help your leadership team develop the skills they need to be successful. This could include workshops, conferences, or even mentoring programs.
Assign roles and responsibilities based on strengths:
Evaluate the strengths of each member of your leadership team and assign roles and responsibilities accordingly. This can help ensure that everyone is working in areas where they excel and can contribute the most.
Consider bringing in outside help:
If your leadership team is consistently struggling and you don’t have the resources to provide the training and development they need, you may need to consider bringing in outside help. This could include consultants or coaches who can help your team develop the skills they need to be successful.
Re-evaluate your hiring process:
If you find that you are consistently hiring leaders who lack the necessary skills and abilities, it may be time to re-evaluate your hiring process. Consider revising job descriptions, changing interview questions, or even bringing in a professional recruiter to help you identify candidates with the right qualifications.
