James Rust, MD of CPS Building Services

“I’m the Managing Director of CPS Building Services. We’re an engineering company specialising in mechanical, electrical and maintenance services of primarily commercial and industrial buildings.

“The initial meeting (with Andrew Kureishy) was at our old office – a discussion on where we were, what we were doing, and where we wanted to be. We thought we’ve got nothing to lose and we’ve got to go for it! The recession then hit. We never struggled getting work or with getting paid, we were doing great… Until we had 3 construction companies go bankrupt, owing us in that year alone nearly £500,000. It was tough. At the time we borrowed money against my house to finance the business, and we had an overdraft. We could have lost it all.

“My initial thoughts of business coaching were scepticism, because it wasn’t something that I’d heard of. But the guarantee that we would turn it around made us want to see how it would go. When working with Andrew, the first thing we got to grips with was the numbers. I was keen to understand the “Five Ways” – the steps of where we needed to be. We still follow this very closely.

“When Andrew first came in, he came across as knowledgeable, realistic, truthful and experienced. It installed some trust in us.

“Within 6 months we could see it was turning things around, but within a year we’d increased profits significantly.”

“Within 6 months we could see it was turning things around, but within a year we’d increased profits significantly. Our turnover has grown roughly 12 times in the last 8 years. Our net profit has grown from £20,000 to £600,000. We had 3 fulltime staff members in the office and 5 engineers on site – now we have 16 in the office fulltime and 30-35 engineers on site. The company has grown significantly.

“The business currently gives me a great earning. I have a great lifestyle, I spend time doing what I want to do and when I want to do it, which is fantastic. I know that the business is in good hands because we’ve got a fantastic team. I don’t work during the holidays – I spend them with my two boys.

“To get the most out of your business, and if you’re prepared to listen, to work, and to be coached, the rewards are there for anyone.”
