Feeling that you always have to be right can cause pressure, anxiety and trepidation, on top of having a growing ‘to do’ list and an endless perception that you’re not getting through much work throughout the day.
The Importance of Taking Action
The truth is that the entrepreneurs who typically achieve outstanding levels of success don’t get there by always doing everything right every time. They ensure everything is done with a moderate amount of accuracy, rather than getting stuck on making everything 100% perfect – this would result in less action.
Countless business ideas are lost because the person dreaming it up wants to get it exactly right or is waiting for the precise moment to launch it. Taking action is one of the number one things I see holding entrepreneurs back.
Why do business owners hesitate on taking action?
There is a simple answer – Fear. You can be overwhelmed and paralysed with fear and your behaviour can stop you right in your tracks. Ideas are easy to talk about, but nothing holds more importance than taking action.
Consider where you are holding yourself back in your business, trying to make sure everything is done exactly right. What would happen if you increased your action taking in your business by 10%? It’s definitely worth keeping in mind.
How do you get past the fear of action?
1. Create motivation
When you take action, adrenaline will kick in and your motivation to get on with other business tasks will sky rocket, ultimately creating motivation to be more proactive.
2. Remember your ‘Why’
I talk about this a lot in business coaching and it’s imperative that you remember why you started up your business. To get you through the challenges you face in business and give you confidence, line up your ‘why’ with your actions.
3. Overcome obstacles
In any business, you will come across hurdles set to throw you off track. Once you see what the barriers are, work on overcoming them.
4. Quit making excuses
The most obvious reasons or ‘excuses’ include:
- The conditions aren’t right yet
- I need to know more
- My existing obligations are draining me
- It might not work
- I’m waiting for help
- I don’t feel that I’m making any progress
- I’m not sure I am good enough?
Whichever ones you are giving yourself for not moving forward, stop it.
5. Remove self-doubt and negative thinking
Don’t fall behind your competitors by taking a back seat because you don’t feel good enough. Take back control by taking action.
6. Commit to a plan
Create a thorough plan incorporating your goals, what you want to achieve and how you will achieve it. Stick to it! Set deadlines too. See what you can accomplish with a forward thinking attitude.
7. Polish your skill set
If you are missing a specific skill required to take action, educate yourself or complete a course. If your time is too limited, outsource the task to someone who has the experience and skills to do it.
‘Action’ is defined by the Oxford Dictionary as “The fact or process of doing something, typically to achieve an aim.” Action is about ‘doing’, so do what you need to do to make it happen. Instead of thinking and dreaming about it, take a leap of faith and take action today. It could change your life forever.
