Getting in a good day’s work

Employees time

There are some professional services firms who are very busy.

However, many are not as busy and this video shares what one of my clients is doing to include all employees in some non-chargeable work, where possible, with a positive impact.

(JK) The rules have changed over the last few weeks and I’m wondering if there are any of your clients who have had to just shuffle around the workload a little bit to make the most of their employees?

(FD) Yes, so I have some clients who are in professional services businesses. What’s happened is some of them are extremely busy and some of them haven’t got that much work at the moment, depending on the type of what they do. Obviously, some have had to furlough employees as well because there isn’t that much workaround.

But my clients are finding that even those employees that are still working, there still isn’t enough chargeable work to do at the moment.

So I suggested to one of my clients that of course, the priority is the chargeable work.

However, is there capacity for the employees to do some non-chargeable work?

Would they help the business in doing some non- chargeable work, which overall is going to benefit them eventually anyway?

We had this discussion, for one of my clients. The employees are helping out in

  • writing blogs for the website and for LinkedIn, looking at new topics that they can talk about going forward,
  • looking at their systems and their processes, what can be improved.
  • looking at the database, looking at who are your key clients and also some clients who you haven’t contacted for a long time.

Just doing the on the business side of things rather than just that in the business side of things.

There is that time available at the moment.

The idea is that once we slowly come out of this period and the workload improves again, you have had this time to really get ahead with all of this other stuff.

So you are in a better position when you come out and you are ahead of your competition.

(JK) So how are they taking to this? This great advice from you.

(FD) They have actually taken it in very positively because they feel like they are included.

It’s more inclusive. They are coming up with some new ideas as well.

So it’s all good because they can actually see that this firm is growing and they have contributed to making it more efficient.

(JK) So this approach of yours is galvanizing the business, isn’t it? It’s helping with staff morale as well as helping with the whole kind of productivity aspect of the business and getting a good day’s work done well.

(FD) Yes, and it’s getting everybody to think as a “we” culture, not a “me” culture. It’s actually having a very good positive impact.
