The formula to get you the best success from business
I would like to introduce to you the simple equation of ‘be, do, have’ – it’s simple, but it’s a formula that can enable you to get the best success from your business and life in general. So often, as business owners, we find ourselves working really hard for long periods, often for limited results. Conversely, we might have all the skills and knowledge but be missing out on applying them sufficiently. If these scenarios apply to you, then you’ll find ‘Be, Do, Have’ invaluable. This simple equation will allow you to BE the person within your field you need to be; DO the necessary tasks within your business to help it thrive; and HAVE the results and life that you want to live, publicly and privately.
So, what is this secret formula?
Be x Do = Have
It may seem simple, and – quite frankly – it is. But there are three things to remember here:
- The best ideas are often the simplest
- You need the correct balance of Be and Do
- Unfortunately, many of us are not applying it effectively to our lives, leaving us short changed at times.
So what exactly does it mean, and how can it benefit you as a business owner?
Be
Be, or being the person you need to be is all about knowledge, skills and attitude. Most business owners I speak to have great knowledge about their product or service, likewise they have the necessary skills to produce and deliver it. However, it’s likely that in areas like admin, finance, marketing, sales, management and leadership knowledge and skills may be insufficient.
Once you know where the gaps are you can go about acquiring the knowledge and skills you need to Be the business person you need to be.
Do
Do, or doing the activity needed. For the best results from Be x Do = Have, we need a good mix of skills, knowledge, attitude and activity (Do). Lots of activity with poor skills or knowledge won’t deliver results, but you will have worked your socks off. Likewise, knowing everything but with a low level of activity will not give you the results you need.
As your business develops so will your need for new skills and knowledge, the activities you undertake will also need to change. Be ready to pass on some of the skills and knowledge to your team as the business grows so they can take on some of the work you used to do.
In essence, a person who is all ‘do’ and no ‘be’ or ‘have’, is similar to the woodchopper who didn’t take time to sharpen their axe.
Have
Finally, you need to know the life you want to ‘have’. You need to set clear goals as to where you want your business to take you and how you see your future, otherwise you will lack the motivation to both ‘be’ or ‘do’.
You might want a new car, to go on a big family vacation, to help your child towards their first deposit for their house – it really doesn’t matter! What matters is that it is special to you, and that it is going to keep you motivated. Crucially, these goals need to be obtainable, but don’t be afraid to dream! I am a big believer that a motivation (or dream) board with all your aspirations on it will help you stay focused; putting pen to paper often makes things feel more real.
