Key coaching achievements
- Re-focusing a business to optimise profitability
- Helped a client who was deeply concerned about low and dropping levels of profitability (at the Profit-Before-Tax level).
- Worked with the client to understand profitability of different parts of the business. It rapidly became clear that the focus needed to switch from the B2C business to the more profitable B2B part of the business.
- On the face of it, the two parts of the business were similar. However, Neil highlighted some key areas of difference.
- The B2B business was much more attractive – lower cost of sales and higher profit margins on the actual contracts.
- As a result of this re-focus, the business is growing in terms of revenue, forward order levels and profitability.
- The business is actively recruiting to meet the increasing demand
- Finding time to work on a business
- Worked with a client who never seemed able to find time to do the work that she wanted to do. She was working 12-14 hours days and taking lots of work home but still never felt on top of things. And, crucially, never had time to think about the business and the long-term direction
- Used a simple but effective tool to help the business owner understand where all the time went
- Introduced the client to the concept of a “dream diary” – a more disciplined approach to prioritising, planning and managing time.
- Used a “Skills/ Fun” matrix to help the client identify opportunities to delegate tasks to her team
- End result was a more motivated team – they felt that they had gained some responsibility and felt that they were able to contribute more effectively to the business
- Business owner could reduce her time commitment whilst feeling much more in control of her time. And, finally, she was able to start planning effectively for the longer-term growth of the business
