Procrastination
Overcoming Procrastination: The Power of Action and Support
This week, I had a powerful reminder of just how damaging procrastination can be and how quickly it can disappear with the right support.
One of my clients had been struggling with a specific task in their business for weeks. Every session, the same issue came up, along with a new set of reasons why it hadn’t been completed. Deep down, these weren’t logistical issues or time constraints; it was procrastination, plain and simple.
That led me to revisit the question: What is procrastination, really?
At its core, procrastination is often rooted in fear, fear of failure, fear of inadequacy, or fear of not having the right skills. It’s rarely about laziness. More often, it’s about self-doubt. When we feel ill-equipped to handle a task, our default response is to avoid it. So we delay, deny, and distract ourselves, hoping the discomfort will pass.
But here’s the breakthrough moment. Once my client engaged in some external training and acquired the skills and confidence needed to tackle the task, the procrastination simply vanished. They weren’t stuck anymore, they were ready and able to move forward. The difference was immediate and dramatic.
This experience reinforced a simple truth: procrastination isn’t a personality flaw, it’s a solvable problem. Often, the solution lies in asking for help. Whether it’s a coach, a course, or a mentor, getting support can make a huge difference. When you build your skills and shift your mindset, the task that once seemed overwhelming becomes entirely doable.
I often say that procrastination is the enemy of success – and it is. But its opposite, action, is the companion to success. The two cannot coexist. So if you find yourself stuck, circling around a task you can’t seem to start, consider this: what fear or skill gap might be holding you back? And who could you reach out to for help?
Don’t let procrastination define your progress. Take action, even a small step, and you might be surprised how quickly momentum builds.
Procrastination doesn’t have to hold you back. Whether it’s fear, uncertainty, or lack of support, there’s a way through. Take the first step today by reaching out for guidance or training. The momentum you’re looking for starts with one small action.
