Does Coaching Mean More Work?
It’s an interesting question which often comes up. Before I offer a direct answer let me ask a different question. Are you ready to work smarter in your business? The point here is coaching will mean more work. More importantly, it will mean working smarter, not harder in the necessary areas required. This question often comes up because the director, executive or business owner is already working really hard. They just aren’t working smart. It’s not unusual to find the bulk of the work being undertaken is in actual fact employees work.
Working Smarter
A great coach will first seek to establish high levels of personal awareness in what and where the coachee is working. They will encourage you to take a detailed look at where you are spending your time. This, in turn, will highlight just how much work you are undertaking that falls into one of the following categories:
- Employees work
- Procrastination
- Unskilled high value
- Skilled high value
- Unskilled low value
- Skilled low value
From here your coach will challenge you to start to make smarter decisions in regards to the work you undertake. Essentially you need to be doing the work where you add value. If you’re a business owner you need to be spending time being the business owner. Doing business owners work. If you’re an executive or director then you need to focus on where you offer the commensurate value to the organisation. When you start to focus on where you add value you’ll experience a dramatic shift in productivity and not only yours but the team as well. You have to take the first steps towards self-management.
Coaching Doesn’t Mean More Work
Taking on a coach will probably be one of the smartest decisions you can make if right now you believe you are working too hard. Having an outside perspective can be very telling in terms of your true productivity. Stop working so hard in your business and start to work smarter on it.
Now there’s a challenging thought..
