Importance of Team Building

Importance of team building in leadership

A strong and engaged team is a happy and productive team.

And as clichéd as it sounds,

“Your team is your biggest asset”.

A lot of business owners are finding how important it is to have an engaged team, especially since remote working has had to be in place for the past few weeks.

One of my clients has been working with me to build a winning team and this video explains how we have done it.

So as we move through this period of lockdown, there are quite a lot of remote communications going on, a lot of people working from home. However, the team as a whole is very, very important.

So, what have you seen and what have you helped out with when it comes to team building within particular enterprises?

(FD) If you have got a happy and engaged team, you are going to get a much higher level of productivity.

People are going to want to carry on working and they can see the results.

One of the things which are often said is

your team is your biggest asset

It sounds clichéd, but it is so true.

I think this period of remote working has really highlighted that because people are working on their own which many people haven’t done before.

How do you maintain the engagement when people are sitting in their own little bubbles at home trying to work like they are in the office?

Of course, they are not in the office, but they are trying to stick to the hours,

let me work out a structure, when do I have a lunch break?

It all becomes quite difficult after a while.

So what I have done with my clients and actually with others as well as to

  • ensure that there is regular communication between the departmental heads
  • but also at a lower level, having 121s with employees
People are feeling that now this has gone on for a long time.

They are feeling quite isolated and just worried about how things are going to pan out.

So really making sure that

  • there are regular meetings,
  • bosses and owners are making themselves available whenever somebody want to speak to them
  • and also sharing regularly outcomes of what has happened in the week for example how the business is doing, as I mentioned in my last episode sharing key performance indicators, sharing any other good news, updating the employees about government guidelines, anything that is relevant for them, just to keep that level of engagement up.

It is so important to have a winning team so that they are fully engaged, fully inclusive. It has to come from good leadership.

The first thing is leadership, the bosses and managing directors have to make sure that they are really stepping up as leaders.

They need to communicate the goals of the business to the employees.

They need to

  • ensure that the employees know the rules of the game are as it were, what the business culture is.
  • have an action plan as to how they are going to reach these goals.
  • ensure that there is risk-taking. If an employee says I have got a good idea, listen to it, try it out, and there has to be 100% participation and inclusivity.

All of those things together make for a winning team, and that is what I have really helped one of my clients to do.

(JK) So really what you are saying is that great team-building comes from great leadership.

(FD) Absolutely.
