Yes…..it’s ok to work this way. I don’t advocate it as a norm but it is often a key interim basis of managing if you are not getting the results you want in your business!!

When your business isn’t performing you will need to review how you are managing it.

Typically the team may not be delivering. Why might this be? Whatever it is you need to help them move, as a minimum, to a position of competency.

Often it’s because you, as the owner, have not set clear goals and timelines for achieving them.

You are allowing drift and slack to be the way you run your business.

Be clear about what you want to achieve, why you need to achieve it and when.

So some key do’s and don’ts:

DO:

  • Set clear SMARTed goals
  • Communicate them to your team
  • Ensure you have clarity on the team members roles/responsibilities and their individual KPI’s
  • Measure and monitor performance-daily/weekly….monthly is too long…..weekly and brief updates (1hr) is a good way to start.
  • Eliminate the non-performers in your team
  • Set appropriate time lines to appraise your individual team members—-take corrective actions fast.
  • Clarify where you/team members need to up your game; list and agree what do you all need to:
    • Do more of
    • Do less of
    • Stop doing
    • Start doing

Don’t

  • Procrastinate
  • Allow slack in your and your team’s performance—-it will only bite you badly!

Tolerance and slack are your big enemy……..don’t allow it!
