Have you ever asked yourself what would happen if you took some time away from your business, for a week, or even a month? What would the effect of this be? Would you see your business survive or thrive, fail or even come to an end? Part of the reason many people want to run their own business is to give them autonomy later on, and a choice to eventually be able to allow their business to run itself, however, many people are not in the position to step away and see their business continue to grow. So how can you build up a business that can run without you?

Decide what your aim is

For some, the motivation is money, but for others, it’s about the gaining back of personal time and the ability to choose to invest this into other things. So the important thing is to decide what it is that will make your business work for you, to work towards your aims. You might discover that you’re actually more productive when you take more time out, as this can help you to come up with new ideas and ways of working. Despite it seeming like you are investing less time, you’re actually reaping a greater reward.

Reduce reliance on you as the owner

Many businesses rely on the owner for guidance, input and daily operations. Sometimes even clients may be accustomed to talking to the owner directly, or employees are relying on the business owner rather than proactively finding the answers to questions themselves. This is not sustainable for business owners wishing to take any time away from their business, so it’s important to empower your team to think for themselves, to train up managers who can manage daily operations and run the business if you are not there.

Utilise technology and communication

It’s not helpful to be contactable at all times as the business owner, because this will allow the reliance on you to continue, but it is wise to utilise technology to share information with your employees and teams to ensure they have access to everything they need without having to contact you. You can also have a dedicated communication method so you can be contacted if anything urgent comes up, and you should find that over time your managers are able to take the reins of your business while you’re not around.
