What are the seven good reasons potential clients should choose your business?

Do you have a spare two minutes to play a game that will reveal a lot about your business? Yes? Great! All you need is a piece of paper, a pen and a clock. I’m going to give you two minutes to write down seven good reasons why your customers should pick you over your competitors. Ready? Go!

How did you do? Did you struggle to think of seven? Were some of your answers a bit repetitive? Could you not even think of any? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. A lot of my clients struggle with this task when I get them to do it. Whilst this was just a fun activity, if you couldn’t think of seven good reasons that potential clients should pick your business, then it would indicate that your marketing does not have a clear strategy. Without a clear strategy, your marketing messaging may get easily lost and be a waste of your time. But this article will set you on your way to discovering the seven reasons for potential customers to pick your business.

Let’s go back to basics

In previous articles, I have introduced what a Point of Difference is within your business structure, and how important they are in making your business stand out to potential customers. Before we try to devise your seven reasons, I highly recommend you read my article on PoD’s here; without a clear idea as to what your PoD is (or are), it will be harder to identify clearly your seven reasons.

Why seven reasons?

Many of my clients ask me why they need seven reasons: will one or two not suffice in order to get a good marketing campaign? Sometimes, yes! Especially if you invest in decent professional marketing, your marketing company will be able to deliver your message with just a couple of good reasons for picking your business.

If, however, your marketing is done with a smaller budget, and largely in house, finding seven reasons is a good way of ensuring that you get across a strong, cohesive message. In fact, even if you can afford a lavish marketing campaign, it is often good to have an idea as to what your seven reasons are as it gives you a wider marketing base, normally built on more Points of Difference from your competitors (which is always a good thing!).

What should my seven reasons be?

In reality, anything! The possibilities are endless, and largely depend upon you and your business. I do suggest that you list them from 1-7 in terms of importance however, to ensure that your key point – and often your key PoD – is the element that is relayed to your customers and potential customers strongest in your marketing communications.

Here are some examples as to what your seven reasons could be:

  • Affordability
  • Uniqueness
  • Quality
  • Speed of service
  • Home delivery
  • Ethical
  • Locality
  • One-of-a-kind
  • Staff
  • Pet friendly
  • Online services
  • Expertise – e.g. when your business was established, qualifications, proven track record

As you can see, these are just a few examples, and the seven reasons can be whatever makes sense for your business and will resonate with your clients and prospects.  What is important is that you are aware of what they are and that your customers and prospects are equally informed by your marketing and sales process.

Nailing your seven reasons is a great way to start creating marketing strategies that will deliver results.  If you are not sure what your seven reasons might be, I am happy to brainstorm ideas with you in an initial, no-obligation meeting.
